Regarding School Vouchersby Various America Online Freethought Forum (keyword: Capital) participants
From: Vetski 94-10-14 As the father of five sons I have had a keen interest in education issues. It is apparent to me that with state and federal regulations and with the stranglehold that unions have on the schools, there needs to be an alternative such as vouchers or tax credits that would allow anyone to choose a school, public or private, of their liking. Competition of this sort seems to be the most practical way to get our public schools to shape up. If your state has a provision for voter initiative this would be a good cause! From: TS Editor 94-10-15 Prop. 174 was our first attempt in California. We'll keep trying. Recommend you read "Engler's Angle, How Tax Relief Became School Reform in Michigan" in the August/September 1994 issue of Reason Magazine, and "Going Private, school voucher programs that don't rely on government funds" in the November 1994 issue of Reason Magazine, P.O. Box 526, Mt. Morris, IL 61054, 815-734-1102. From: Iowa Chess 94-10-20 Free markets make us the best cars in the world. Why not free markets making us the best schools??? From: Guy FB 94 - 11-11 Has anyone given any thought to an existing model of a very mixed public/private educational system where government money is available to students for use in the private schools? I'm talking about the college system. If the state schools didn't exist, do you think the private colleges would be less expensive and offer better quality? Suggest you ponder just how great the public/private college system is before projecting that vouchers will be certain to solve problems at the lower levels. From: STEVE11319 94 - 11-14 Everyone keeps saying that using the vouchers in a parochial school is unconstitutional. Yet, couldn't veterans on the GI Bill go to schools such as Harvard? That is a Methodist School. Why is that constitutional? From: RUSSMONGO 94-10-29 Free market vs public schools. No law exists, and outside of the manufacturers, no one in this society requires you to buy a car, no such choice regarding school (education). Our people have insisted we should educate our children. Vouchers, here in Michigan anyway, are a method that some groups are using to get public moneys from taxpayers into private schools. I, and many like me are adamantly opposed to supporting a parochial school. (It is unconstitutional.) Possibly a system within the public schools exclusively could be ok but the movement would then lose its support from most of the groups initiating this. From: RUSSMONGO 94-10-29 The so-called Charter school programs, basically voucher-type schools have been brought to a screeching halt with their funding stopped. Here in Michigan, Gov. Engler's ideas are currently on hold while appeals go through the courts.
